Communication Styles

Not all communication is the same, and not all of it builds connection.

Most couples move between 3 communication styles (often without realizing it):

1. Critical/Defensive Focus: criticizing & defending yourself This sounds like: “Are you kidding me?” “You’re the one that…” “Don’t blame me…” Goal: win, prove a point, defend your side → The problem? It escalates fast and leaves both people feeling attacked.

2. Analytical Focus: solving the problem This sounds like: “What’s the issue?” “That won’t work.” “Here’s what needs to happen.” Goal: fix it, find the best solution → Helpful… but can feel cold if emotions aren’t acknowledged first.

3. Connective (what actually builds intimacy) Focus: understanding & emotional safety This sounds like: “The trouble I’m having is…” “What is it like for you?” “How can I help?” Goal: empathy, validation, and connection → This is where trust and closeness grow.

Most conflict isn’t about the issue itself, it’s about the style being used.
